Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-014 for the 2020 Jefferson Nickel, this doubled die reverse variety shows light spread south as an extra right triangle bottom on the Return to Monticello reverse. The southward displacement affects an architectural detail of the triangular pediment area, creating a secondary contour visible under magnification below the primary design impression. The reference to a triangle bottom relates to the triangular pediment structure above the columned portico of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello mansion. Die stage documentation uses placeholder UVC and DMR codes (question marks), suggesting this variety may have been recently discovered with full attribution still in progress. Stage A represents Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B reaches Mid Die State with a diagnostic die depression in the field west of the building — a localized sinking of the die surface that produces a raised area on struck coins in the field to the left of Monticello — while the obverse also shows MDS characteristics. Stage C represents Late Die State, unconfirmed. The 2020-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel composition at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. The light designation indicates this variety requires careful examination under 10x or higher magnification to resolve the secondary triangle bottom impression displaced southward from its primary position on the Monticello facade.
