Description

Strong extra thickness characterizes this thirteenth documented doubled die reverse for the 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, with the doubling visible across a wide range of design elements: the central design, E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES, MONTICELLO, and FIVE CENTS. Such broad distribution of doubling across multiple inscription and device areas indicates that the misalignment during hubbing affected the die at a fundamental level rather than producing the localized spread seen on many lesser doubled dies. Cataloged by VarietyVista with pending attribution codes UVC-???? and DMR-00?, this variety has been tracked through at least three die stages. Stage A presents both reverse and obverse in early die state. Stage B, at mid-die-state, remains unconfirmed, as does Stage C at late die state. Identifying confirmed die markers for later stages is an open area of research for this variety. The 2020 date was the final year of the classic Felix Schlag Monticello reverse before the series transitioned to a new design, making VDDR-013 part of the last generation of doubled dies bearing this long-running reverse type.
