2020 VDDR VDDR-003
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this 2020 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse displays light spread to the south, manifesting as extra detail at the top left roof of the central doorway on Monticello. The southward spread direction indicates the hub shifted slightly downward between impressions during die manufacture, depositing a faint secondary outline of the roofline visible where the angular roof geometry creates contrast between doubled and primary impressions. Three die stages track this die. Stage A represents the early die state, where the light spread appears clearest before striking wear softens the surface. Stage B is the mid-die state, though confirmation remains pending. Stage C shows the late die state, also awaiting confirmation, where fatigue may further reduce visibility of the already-light doubling. Light-spread varieties on the Monticello reverse reward patient examination, as the building's fine lines — roof edges, window frames, and column capitals — can reveal hub doubling that broader design areas might not show. The VDDR-003 designation places this as the third cataloged doubled die reverse in the VarietyVista system for the 2020 Jefferson Nickel.
