Description

Designated under VarietyVista's VDDR classification, this 2020-P Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows light spread south manifesting as an extra lower bar of the triangle above Monticello's central doorway. The pediment triangle above the door provided a geometric zone where the southward-directed secondary hub impression created a visible additional bar element. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B at Early MDS captures the die in its initial mid-production phase, and Stage C at Late Die State is unconfirmed. The EMDS classification for Stage B indicates the die had just entered its mid-life period when the documented specimen was struck, suggesting the doubling would appear on coins from relatively early in the die's run. Philadelphia struck hundreds of millions of Jefferson Nickels in 2020, and the second cataloged VDDR for the date demonstrates that variety research on current-production nickels continues to identify new doubled die varieties. The southward spread direction and the architectural specificity of the affected element — a single bar within the pediment triangle — make this a precisely localized variety.
