Description

Exhibiting Class VIII tilted hub doubling inside the left portion of the triangle above the center door above the steps on Monticello, this 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse represents one of the rarer doubling mechanisms in modern die variety research. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread distinct from the more common lateral or vertical shifts seen in other classes. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2020-P WDDR-027, the high sequence number reflects the intensity of research on current-year coinage. A small die gouge in the field above the R of AMERICA on the reverse serves as a secondary die marker for attribution. The 2020 date carries added significance as the final year of the original Felix Schlag Monticello reverse, in continuous production since 1938 before the 2025 redesign. Twenty-seven doubled die reverses documented for a single date and mint is remarkable by any standard.
