Description

Identified by the Wexler Team and assigned Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-026, this Jefferson Nickel carries Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The tilted hub mechanism produces a secondary impression offset from the primary design, and the doorway area of Monticello concentrates enough fine architectural detail to make even slight displacement detectable under magnification. Two die markers anchor the attribution. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits in the field between the D of GOD and the W of WE, providing a quick preliminary check before examining the reverse doubling. The reverse carries a complementary marker: a small die gouge positioned above the F of FIVE. Together these gouges — one on each side — create a two-point confirmation system independent of the doubling itself. The 2020-P Jefferson Nickel was produced during a year of significant Mint output, and die varieties from high-production dates can be both surprisingly common in absolute numbers yet difficult to locate without systematic searching, since most coins enter circulation unexamined by variety-aware eyes.
