2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

Brian Sims attributed this 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse, cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-015. The variety exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the left upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — a location that has proven particularly productive for doubled die discoveries due to the fine architectural detail of Thomas Jefferson's estate. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub during the hubbing process, producing rotational spread distinct from the lateral shifts of more common doubling classes. Reverse die markers include a die gouge below the T of MONTICELLO and a die gouge below the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, while no obverse markers were noted. The 2020-P nickel was struck during a year when the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to U.S. Mint operations, including temporary facility closures and reduced staffing that affected production schedules and coin circulation nationwide. Despite these challenges, the Philadelphia Mint produced substantial quantities of nickels to address the national coin circulation crisis.
