2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Jessy Gozum and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-011, this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel presents Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper right portion and extending down the right side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Return to Monticello reverse. The vertical extension of the doubling down the right side of the doorframe — rather than being confined to just the upper portion — indicates the tilt axis of the hub was oriented in a direction that maximized displacement along this vertical architectural element, creating a longer zone of visible doubling than varieties where the effect is limited to a small area. Obverse die markers include a die dot on the lower portion of Jefferson's left cheek. Reverse markers are particularly informative: a die dot inside the small left window, a pre-die break depression to the left of the left edge of the building, and a die dot inside the lower portion of N of CENTS. The pre-die break depression is a significant progressive marker, representing an area where the die steel has begun to fatigue but has not yet fractured — a precursor to the die cracks and breaks that would develop in later die states. The 2020-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets. Examine the right side of the center doorframe under 7x magnification for the extended vertical doubling pattern.
