2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

William Bonina attributed this fifth doubled die reverse for the 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, a Class VIII tilted hub doubled die showing doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello building. Tilted hub doubling creates displacement that varies in magnitude across the die depending on proximity to the tilt axis, and the door frame area provides sufficiently fine architectural detail to reveal this type of subtle displacement. Die markers appear on both sides: the obverse shows die chips on Jefferson's chin along with many die chips on the right side of his cheek and neck, while the reverse displays die gouges on the ME of AMERICA and die gouges above and to the right of the long right window. The clustering of obverse die chips on Jefferson's chin, cheek, and neck suggests progressive die deterioration concentrated on the high-relief portrait area. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-005, this variety continues the pattern of Class VIII tilted hub doubling documented extensively on Jefferson Nickel Monticello reverses.
