Description

Discovered by Brian Sims, the 2020-P Jefferson Nickel WDDR-003 displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the Monticello steps. The obverse die carries a series of die gouges on Jefferson's scarf just above his collar and a die gouge to the left of the I in IN. On the reverse, a die break appears on the left edge of the building, accompanied by a heavy die gouge below and between the left long and small windows and another gouge between the E and P of E PLURIBUS. The center door area of Monticello has proven to be the most sensitive zone for detecting tilted hub doubling on Jefferson Nickel reverses, as the straight architectural lines of the door frame readily reveal even slight angular displacement. The die break on the left building edge suggests this die saw significant use, and collectors may find this variety in varying stages of that break's progression depending on when individual coins were struck during the die's service life.
