2019 UFO Variety WUFO-001

Description

Designated WUFO-001 by the Wexler Team (2019-P 25¢ MA WUFO-001), this 2019 Philadelphia Lowell National Park quarter hosts an Unidentified Fascinating Oddity — a die anomaly whose precise origin remains under study. UFO varieties are cataloged when a die exhibits features outside established error categories yet are clearly die-related and repeatable. The initial anomaly is a circular die ring on Washington's ear that in later stages progresses into a large die chip. Advanced-state obverse markers include a die crack northwest from the ear chip, a thin crack across the bust above ER in QUARTER, and die gouges at the bust tip, below the first R in QUARTER, left of the G in GOD, behind Washington's head, and below the first A in AMERICA. Reverse markers include thin cracks on the clock tower, a crack on the woman's elbow, and a gouge on her arm. The progression from ring to chip suggests subsurface metal failure expanding with use. The Lowell quarter was the first 2019 America the Beautiful issue.
