Description
Cataloged second among Denver's 2019 Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverses, WDDR-002 documents a hub misalignment event that impressed secondary design images onto a working die during the die manufacturing process. The Wexler Team listed this variety with no known cross-references alongside the identifier 2019-D 10c WDDR-002, confirming it has been documented exclusively within the Wexler system. Roosevelt Dime production at the Denver Mint in 2019 continued the modern pattern of high-volume output, with the facility producing hundreds of millions of dimes annually to meet circulation demand across the western United States. Each batch of working dies used in this production was hubbed from a single master die, and any misalignment between hub and working die during successive impressions created the mechanical conditions for a doubled die. WDDR-002's position as the second cataloged variety means at least one other DDR (WDDR-001) shares the same date-mintmark, requiring careful differentiation based on the specific reverse elements affected and the direction of spread. Sinnock's reverse composition — the central torch flanked by olive and oak branches, surrounded by the inscriptions ONE DIME, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and E PLURIBUS UNUM — provides established diagnostic zones that have been used across decades of Roosevelt Dime DDR attribution. The clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel over copper core) at 2.268 grams produces surfaces that can be either brilliant or subtly toned in uncirculated condition. Examination under 7x magnification with directional lighting angled across the torch and lettering areas provides optimal diagnostic conditions for detecting and characterizing the hub doubling.
