Description

Eighth in the Wexler-documented obverse doubled die census for the 2017 Lincoln Shield cent, WDDO-008 presents moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the notable diagnostic detail that the upper left and upper right arms of the letter Y exhibit approximately equal thickness — a symmetry observation that helps distinguish this specific hub doubling from die deterioration effects that would typically produce irregular thickening. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, in its one hundred and eighth year of obverse production by 2017, carried the LIBERTY inscription along the left side of the coin where it had served as a primary doubling detection zone since the series' inception. Lyndall Bass's Shield reverse, entering its seventh year, paired with the enduring Brenner obverse. The Wexler Team noted no significant die markers on either the obverse or reverse, meaning attribution must rely primarily on the LIBERTY doubling characteristics themselves rather than on secondary die-specific fingerprints. This absence of independent die markers makes careful examination of the doubling particularly important for confident attribution. The Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 1¢ WDDO-008 provides the formal catalog reference, with no cross-references from CONECA or other attribution services currently known. Moderate extra thickness indicates a doubling intensity between light and strong — clearly visible under appropriate magnification but not producing the dramatic separation seen on the most celebrated doubled dies. Philadelphia produced billions of cents in 2017, and eight documented DDOs reflect the variety potential inherent in massive die consumption. Collectors should examine all five letters of LIBERTY under 10-15x magnification, paying particular attention to the Y where the equal thickness of the upper arms provides a confirmatory diagnostic unique to WDDO-008.
