2017 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 2017-P 1c WDDO-002 with no other known cross-references, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent shows moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the upper left portion of the Y appearing considerably thicker than the upper right — an asymmetric thickening characteristic of certain doubled die classes where the hub impression shifts in a way that reinforces one side of letter strokes more than the other. Obverse die markers include die pitting on the front of the vest to the left of the P mintmark, along with a small die gouge touching the top left of the mintmark itself. No significant reverse markers were noted. The Lincoln Shield Cent design, introduced in 2010 as a permanent successor to the 2009 Bicentennial reverses, features Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse paired with Victor David Brenner's classic Lincoln portrait obverse that has graced the cent since 1909. The 2017-P cent was struck during the period when Philadelphia began adding its "P" mintmark to cents for the first time in 2017, making doubled die varieties from this year particularly collectible as they represent the inaugural P-marked cent production. Extra thickness doubling on LIBERTY makes this variety accessible to collectors who can examine the word under moderate magnification, comparing the left and right stroke widths of each letter.
