2017 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

A doubled die obverse for the 2017 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent, DDO-001 was attributed by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-3409 and marker reference DMR-002. This variety displays medium extra thickness on the date numerals and on TRUST from the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Stage A documentation shows the obverse in early-to-mid die state with a small die chip on the upper left shield edge, also in early-to-mid die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The extra thickness on TRUST and the date provides two separate diagnostic zones for cherry-pickers, and the die chip on the shield edge at Stage A offers an additional authentication marker for specimens struck early in the die's life. Modern Lincoln Shield cents struck at Philadelphia since 2010 continue to yield doubled die varieties despite advances in die production technology, demonstrating that hub-to-die transfer remains an imperfect process.
