Listed in the Cuds on Coins die chip registry as DC-5c-2017P-01R, this variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 2017 Jefferson Nickel, with the chip specifically located on the letter E in FIVE on the reverse. Die chips are distinguished from cuds by scale: a chip represents the loss of a compact fragment of die steel from a localized stress point, producing a small raised area on the struck coin, while a full cud involves a larger section breaking away from the rim zone. The chip on the E of FIVE appears as a small raised blob partially filling or distorting the letter, visible under moderate magnification. No separate cross-reference has been recorded.
