Description

Showing light spread to the South as an extra roof line on the central doorway of Monticello, VDDR-003 documents a minor hub displacement on the 2017 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel reverse. The central doorway of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate is one of the most finely detailed areas of the nickel's reverse design, and even light southward spread produces a visible secondary roofline that sits just below the primary. Light classification means the doubling requires careful examination under magnification, as the secondary image remains close to the primary — but the architectural geometry of the doorway provides clean straight lines that make the spread easier to identify than equivalent doubling on curved design elements. Die stage progression spans Early Die State through Late Die State. Monticello doorway varieties are a recurring category among Jefferson nickel DDRs because the roof and column elements of the portico offer precise reference lines where hub displacement becomes readily apparent to trained attributors examining the reverse under a loupe.
