Description

Arlene Craver identified this 2017 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse, which exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. The tilted hub mechanism creates spread concentrated around the architectural doorframe details where slight angular displacement produces measurable separation. An unusually rich set of die markers distinguishes this variety: the obverse carries a die dot to the right of the second T in TRUST, while the reverse presents a die break depression below the E of CENTS, a die break in the upper right portion of the left arch, and a die dot between the upper portions of the first and second columns. The die break depression below CENTS is particularly notable since depressions indicate subsurface die fatigue. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P WDDR-002, this variety demonstrates how Monticello's columned facade and arched windows provide numerous reference points for die marker documentation on Jefferson Nickel reverses.
