Description

Primary doubled die reverse for the 2017 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 displays Class VI distended hub doubling with strong extra thickness on UNITED STATES, PLURIBUS, FIVE CENTS, and elements across the left two-thirds of the Monticello building. Additionally, pronounced notching appears on the first five letters of MONTICELLO, where the Class VI mechanism creates step-like interruptions at letter edges. Discovered by Charles Hudson, the obverse marker is a die dot to the left of Jefferson's right eye. The reverse carries a die chip inside the center dome arch of Monticello. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P WDDR-001. Class VI distended hub doubling results from excessive metal flow during the hubbing process, producing thickened design elements rather than the separated doubled images characteristic of other classes. The breadth of affected elements — spanning multiple legend texts and two-thirds of the building — indicates substantial distortion across the die face. As the lead DDR for the date, WDDR-001 represents the most significant reverse hub anomaly documented on the 2017 Philadelphia nickel.
