Description

Assigned Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25¢ MO WDDR-024 and cross-referenced with VarietyVista as VDDR-004, this Philadelphia-struck Ozark Riverways National Park quarter displays strong reverse doubling on the right side of the tree to the left of the angling roof in the mill scene. Compared to the related WDDR-023, the doubling on WDDR-024 extends further to the south on the tree. Submitted by James Cassin, the variety shows two die stages on the obverse. Stage A includes a die chip on the base of the bust above the D in DOLLAR, a large die gouge left of the bottom of the T in QUARTER, and a die gouge left of the A in QUARTER. By Stage B, a die crack crosses the base of the bust while short north-south die scratches appear right of the T in LIBERTY and a die gouge is visible right of the Q in QUARTER. No significant reverse markers were noted. The Ozark Riverways design features detailed architectural and natural elements that provide ample surface area for doubled die effects, and the tree doubling on WDDR-024 is one of the stronger examples from the 2017 America the Beautiful quarter program.
