Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 25c MO WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse variety was identified on the 2017 Philadelphia Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter, one of five America the Beautiful designs released that year. A doubled die obverse results from a misalignment during the hub-to-die transfer process, where the hub impresses the die at two slightly different positions, leaving a secondary ghost image on every coin struck from that die. The Ozark Riverways reverse, designed by Ronald D. Sanders and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts Alley Spring and its iconic red mill building — a scene whose fine architectural detail provides numerous surfaces where doubling could manifest. No supplementary cross-references are currently known for this variety beyond the Wexler designation. The America the Beautiful Quarter program ran from 2010 to 2021, producing five designs per year honoring national parks and sites in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm and reeded edge. John Flanagan's Washington portrait on the obverse positions IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY as primary pickup areas for doubled die examination. Collectors should inspect the motto, date, and portrait details under 5x-10x magnification with angled lighting.
