Description

Submitted by Kenneth R. Simpson and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 25-cent MO WDDO-001, this doubled die obverse on the 2017 Effigy Mounds (Missouri) quarter from the America the Beautiful series presents moderate doubling on LIBERTY and QUARTER DOLLAR. As WDDO-001, it holds the primary obverse doubled die catalog position for this date-mint-design combination. Obverse die markers include a die chip at the base of the bust north of the T in QUARTER, a short vertical die gouge below the left side of the E in STATES, and a die chip to the left of the designer's initials. No significant reverse die markers were noted. The moderate intensity classification indicates doubling clearly visible under standard loupe magnification without requiring specialized lighting techniques, making this variety accessible to cherry-pickers examining circulation finds or uncirculated rolls. The America the Beautiful quarter program (2010-2021) produced five reverse designs annually, with each design struck at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints on copper-nickel clad planchets weighing 5.67 grams and measuring 24.26 mm in diameter. The Effigy Mounds design by Richard Masters depicts three mounds characteristic of the ancient Native American earthworks in Iowa. Moderate spread on both LIBERTY and QUARTER DOLLAR spans the obverse's primary inscription areas, providing two independent diagnostic zones — one at the upper left and one at the lower periphery — that together confirm the doubled die attribution with confidence.
