Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling appears below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this ninth doubled die reverse cataloged for the 2017 Jefferson Nickel. Class VIII doubling results from an angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational displacement that manifests differently across the design depending on distance from the tilt axis. Die markers include a die gouge above numeral 1 of the date on the obverse, a die gouge (dot) to the left of the upper portion of the right arch on the reverse, and a die gouge between C and A of AMERICA on the reverse. These die-specific markers allow confident attribution even when the doubling itself is subtle. The 2017 Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello reverse design adopted in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey commemorative series, and the Monticello architectural detail — with its doors, windows, steps, and arches — provides abundant areas where hub doubling can manifest. Nine documented doubled die reverses for a single date reflects the intensity of modern variety research on current-year coinage.
