2017 (D) Lincoln Shield Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

WDDO-001 (Wexler Variety ID: 2017-D 1-cent WDDO-001) is a doubled die obverse for the 2017 Denver-mint Lincoln Shield Cent. The Wexler Team documented this variety with no additional cross-references known. Hub doubling on the Lincoln cent obverse can affect a range of design elements: the LIBERTY inscription along the left field, IN GOD WE TRUST across the lower obverse, the date numerals, and the fine details of Lincoln's hair, coat collar, and bowtie in Victor David Brenner's portrait that has graced the cent since 1909. The 2017-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition, with a core of 97.5% zinc coated in 2.5% copper, at a weight of 2.5 grams and diameter of 19.05 mm. The reverse bears Lyndall Bass's Union Shield design, introduced in 2010, featuring a heraldic shield with horizontal lines representing the states bound together under the federal government. Modern Lincoln cent varieties from the Denver Mint tend to generate collector interest among roll searchers who obtain uncirculated examples directly from Mint-sealed rolls and examine them systematically for attributable hub doubling across the obverse design elements.
