2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Holding the primary DDR catalog position for the 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDR-001 was cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016 1-cent WDDR-001 and exhibits significant extra thickness on the designer's initials LB — the initials of Lyndall Bass, who designed the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. The extra thickness on the initials manifests as broadened letter strokes that appear bolder than standard strikes, a result of overlapping hub impressions during the die-sinking process. An obverse die marker provides attribution support: a small die gouge can be found well east of Lincoln's chin. Reverse markers are more extensive: a small die gouge below the A in STATES, a small die gouge above the scroll north of the T in CENT, a die crack running across the top left of the shield, and small die chips north of the R in PLURIBUS. The constellation of reverse die markers — particularly the die crack across the shield — provides multiple independent attribution checkpoints. Cross-references list no known attributions outside the Wexler system. The 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.50 grams on 19mm planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. The Union Shield reverse features thirteen vertical stripes, a horizontal bar inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a banner reading ONE CENT — elements that have proven fertile ground for die variety discoveries since the design's introduction.
