2016 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2016-02
Error
Description
This is the second documented atypical die clash for the 2016 Lincoln Shield cent, cataloged as ADC-1c-2016-02 by MadDieClashes. An atypical die clash differs from a standard die clash in that the design element transfer occurs in an unusual position or from an unexpected source, often because a die from a different denomination or a die in an abnormal orientation was involved. The primary pickup points for this variety are the P from PLURIBUS that clashes below the Y in LIBERTY and its position relative to the back of the head and LIBERTY, along with UNUM and its position relative to the date and the bow tie. Compared to the first 2016 listing (ADC-1c-2016-01), this die is weaker, with the clash mark from the P in PLURIBUS barely visible. The coin is composed of copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter, featuring the Shield reverse designed by Lyndall Bass that was introduced in 2010. This particular specimen is in the collection of J. Cuvelier. Atypical die clashes are among the most fascinating error types in modern numismatics because they reveal unexpected interactions in the die production and storage process. The Lincoln Shield Cents 2010 to Date series, with its bold Union shield reverse, provides distinctive clash patterns that differ significantly from the earlier Memorial reverse clashes. Die clash varieties require careful examination of the fields around the main design elements to identify the ghostly transferred impressions.
