Description

Cataloged by MadDieClashes and represented in the collection of J. Cuvelier, ADC-1C-2016-01 is the first and strongest of several documented 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent die clash listings — making careful comparison with related 2016 clashes essential, since clash mark positions must be scrutinized carefully to distinguish among the group. In a standard die clash, the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet and each receives an impression of the opposite face; in an atypical die clash, the geometry or intensity produces unusual transfer patterns not seen in conventional clashes. For ADC-1C-2016-01, the primary pick-up points are the P from PLURIBUS clashing below the Y in LIBERTY (assessed relative to Washington's head and the LIBERTY legend), and UNUM positioned relative to the date and bow tie on the obverse. These transferred reverse elements on the obverse face are the defining atypical clash features. Die 01 is documented as the strongest 2016 clash; collectors should compare clash mark depth and position against other 2016 shield clash listings before finalizing attribution.
