Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016-P 25c WV WDDR-015 with no other known cross-references, this doubled die reverse was discovered on the 2016 Philadelphia Harpers Ferry (West Virginia) America the Beautiful Quarter. The doubling manifests in the windows of the arch above the center doorway, specifically in the third and fourth windows from the left in the bottom row. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the left side of the S in TRUST, a die gouge to the left of the top of the N in UNITED, and NE/SW die scratches above the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse die markers show two die gouges just right of the left roof and a gouge between the branches below FERRY. The Harpers Ferry quarter, designed by Thomas Hipschen, depicts the historic John Brown Fort with the Appalachian landscape visible through the building's arched doorway, creating detailed architectural elements where hub doubling in the window areas produces diagnostic evidence. The concentration of visible doubling specifically in two adjacent bottom-row windows of the center arch indicates the hub displacement vector aligned most favorably with those particular architectural details while remaining below detection thresholds elsewhere on the reverse. The 2016-P quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (5.670 grams, 24.3 mm). The America the Beautiful Quarters program (2010-2021) featured 56 national park and site designs, with each unique reverse providing distinct diagnostic surfaces for variety detection. The multiple obverse die markers create a robust attribution toolkit.
