Description

By the time the Wexler catalog reached WDDR-013 for the 2016-P Harpers Ferry quarter — Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-013 — the issue had established itself as one of the most variety-rich entries in the ATB program. Thirteen documented reverse doubled dies from a single date and mint exceeds the typical discovery rate, where most issues accumulate between two and eight DDR entries. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park encompasses 3,700 acres across West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. The quarter's reverse captures the dramatic topography of the water gap where the Blue Ridge Mountains are cut by converging rivers. The doubled die reverse mechanism on ATB quarters involves misalignment during hubbing of individual reverse working dies. Since each of the 56 ATB reverses required its own master hub, working hubs, and production dies, the potential for misalignment was present at every manufacturing step. WDDR-013 is identifiable through comparison with Wexler reference photographs.
