Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-012, this Philadelphia Mint Harpers Ferry National Park Quarter from the America the Beautiful series displays doubled die reverse characteristics in the armory building's architectural details. Doubling appears in the windows of the arch above the center doorway: the second window from the right in the bottom row and the second, third, and fourth windows from the right in the second row all show secondary impressions. Two die stages have been documented. Stage A presents no significant die markers on either side, while Stage B develops die chips to the left and right of the designer's initials on the obverse, with the reverse unchanged from Stage A. This progression allows collectors to determine where their specimen falls in the production sequence. The Harpers Ferry design by Thomas Hipschen depicts the historic John Brown Fort in West Virginia, released as the 33rd issue in the ATB quarter program. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition, ATB quarters have generated significant variety collector interest due to detailed reverse designs that readily show hub doubling.
