The Harpers Ferry reverse's intricate landscape — featuring the historic town at the river confluence below steep wooded bluffs — presents numerous fine design elements where hub misalignment produces detectable doubling. During hubbing, a hardened hub bearing the design in positive relief is pressed into a softened die blank. If the hub shifts between successive impressions, the resulting die carries overlapping images that transfer as doubled elements on every coin struck.
