Description

Documented under Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-006, this doubled die reverse on the 2016 Harpers Ferry National Park Quarter represents one entry in the most extensively cataloged DDR sequence for any ATB quarter design. The Harpers Ferry reverse's intricate landscape — featuring the historic town at the river confluence below steep wooded bluffs — presents numerous fine design elements where hub misalignment produces detectable doubling. During hubbing, a hardened hub bearing the design in positive relief is pressed into a softened die blank. If the hub shifts between successive impressions, the resulting die carries overlapping images that transfer as doubled elements on every coin struck. Harpers Ferry's significance extends well beyond John Brown's 1859 raid — the town changed hands eight times during the Civil War and witnessed the largest surrender of Union troops during the 1862 Maryland Campaign. Philadelphia's production required extensive die inventories to meet multi-hundred-million unit demand.
