2016 (P) Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

2016-P WV WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 2016-P Harpers Ferry National Historical Park quarter (West Virginia) in the America the Beautiful series, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling lies in the windows of the arch over the central doorway: the first four windows from the left in the lowest row. On earlier die stages the second row shows slight doubling as well. Obverse Stage A has a small die chip sitting between the designer's initials J and F; small gouges over DOLLAR's first L and over the left side of QUARTER's T; a gouge touching the right side of LIBERTY's B; and a small gouge between the tops of TRUST's U and S. On Stage B the gouge over the L remains and the other Stage A gouges have worn away; left of the designer's initials a large chip has formed, and a long crack runs W from it, and there are new gouges over the left side of LIBERTY's B and left of STATES' first A. On Stage C the Stage B gouges over the B and left of the S have worn away; the gouge over the L is still there, though Wexler says by this stage it may be a new gouge that happens to sit in the same spot; and further chips have appeared on the bust, over QUARTER's TE and to the right of the designer's initials. Reverse Stage A has a WNW/ESE scratch in the guard tower's left opening, two large gouges right of the S of BROWN'S, and a large gouge under JOHN's J. On Stage B the scratch remains; the Stage A gouges were not noted, though Wexler says they should be there, perhaps weak; and a gouge appears right of the branches under FERRY. On Stage C the scratch has worn away and the Stage B gouge is weak but present; Wexler notes heavy die flow and no other notable markers. Aaron Laramee submitted Stage A, George W. Powell, Jr. Stage B, and Alfonso Lopez Stage C, with additional die markers from a coin sent in by George W. Powell, Jr. Wexler lists no cross-references.
