Description

Second documented reverse die chip on the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Shawnee National Forest quarter, DC-25c-2016P-02R(SNP) records a small fragment of die steel that chipped away from the die surface, leaving a void that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised bump or blob on the finished coin. Die chips differ from cuds in that they occur within the interior of the die face rather than at the rim edge, and they are typically smaller and less dramatic, though some die chips can be quite prominent. The Shawnee National Forest design, part of the America the Beautiful quarter program, depicts a close-up view of a praying mantis perched on a plant in this southern Illinois forest. The ATB program ran from 2010 through 2021, producing five new reverse designs each year, and the Philadelphia Mint struck these in large quantities for general circulation. Reverse die chips on ATB quarters are regularly reported due to the high production volumes and the intricate reverse designs that create stress concentration points where die steel is more prone to chipping.
