Description

A reverse die chip on the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Shawnee National Forest quarter, DC-25c-2016P-02R(SNP) records a small fragment of die steel that chipped away from the die surface, leaving a void that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised bump or blob on the finished coin. Die chips differ from cuds in that they occur within the interior of the die face rather than at the rim edge, and they are typically smaller, though some die chips can be quite prominent.
