Modern Mint die production uses single-squeeze hubbing, which did not end hub doubling; Wexler reports that minor doubled dies have turned up more often from single-squeeze presses than from the old multiple-squeeze ones. Under single-squeeze, the full design is transferred in one press cycle, but mechanical tolerances and die blank positioning can still produce occasional misalignment. When misalignment occurs, it affects the entire working die uniformly — every coin displays identical doubling, making each WDDR entry a consistent, attributable variety. The Harpers Ferry site's role as a crossroads of American history spans from George Washington's choice of the site for a national armory in 1794 through Meriwether Lewis's procurement of expedition rifles there in 1803 to John Brown's 1859 raid.
