2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-036
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-036, this America the Beautiful Quarter from the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park design displays doubling in the windows of the arch above the center doorway — specifically in the third and fourth windows from the left in the bottom row and in the third and fourth windows from the left in the second row from the bottom. This architectural detail doubling produces visible secondary window impressions within the building facade depicted on the reverse, making it a variety whose diagnostics are intimately tied to the specific design elements of the Harpers Ferry issue. Obverse die markers include a die gouge at the lower right inside of the A in QUARTER, a die gouge left of the O in DOLLAR, and a small die gouge inside the U in UNITED. The reverse carries a small gouge at the top of the first doorway. No additional cross-references are known. The 2016 Harpers Ferry (West Virginia) quarter is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program (2010–2021), featuring a reverse designed by Thomas Hipschen depicting the historic John Brown's Fort at Harpers Ferry. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, this issue commemorates the site where John Brown's 1859 raid on the federal armory became a pivotal event leading to the Civil War. The window-specific doubling creates a distinctive diagnostic that requires comparing the window openings against undoubled examples of the same design, as the small scale of these architectural features means the doubling manifests as subtle extra lines within the already intricate building rendering.
