2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-031, this America the Beautiful Quarter presents a doubled die reverse visible in the windows of the arch above the center doorway of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park design. The doubling appears in the second and third windows from the left in the bottom row and the first, second, and third windows from the left in the second row — a multi-window distribution demonstrating how the hub displacement affected an extended zone of the architectural facade rather than a single isolated element. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge in the lower opening of the S in TRUST and a small die gouge between the E and D in UNITED. Reverse markers include weak NW/SE die scratches between the second barrel and the N in BROWN’S, and a die gouge between the branches above the right roof. No additional cross-references are currently known. The 2016 Harpers Ferry Quarter honors the West Virginia national historical park, site of John Brown’s famous 1859 raid. The reverse, designed by Thomas Hipschen, depicts the historic armory building with its distinctive arched windows and doorway — the same architectural features where the doubling manifests. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, balance copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, the obverse features John Flanagan’s Washington portrait. The five-window doubling pattern across two rows of the arched facade creates a visually cohesive zone of displacement that provides multiple diagnostic checkpoints within a concentrated area of the building’s design, allowing for confident attribution even when individual windows show varying degrees of doubling intensity.
