Description

The 2015 (S) Proof Kisatchie National Forest Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 762,407 clad proof Kisatchie quarters dated 2015. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a wild turkey in flight over bluestem grass with longleaf pine trees. Kisatchie is the only national forest in Louisiana, protecting the distinctive longleaf pine ecosystem that once covered vast stretches of the Gulf Coastal Plain. Homestead (NE), Kisatchie (LA), Blue Ridge Parkway (NC), Bombay Hook (DE), and Saratoga (NY) were featured. The program entered its middle years with steady collector participation. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #537579.
