2015 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-032

Description

Assigned Wexler Variety ID 2015 1¢ WDDO-032, this Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent displays doubled die obverse characteristics most prominently in the letters of LIBERTY. Extra thickness appears across the full inscription, with the top right branch of the Y noticeably thicker than the top left branch, and diagnostic notches visible on the lower left portions of E, R, T, and Y. The obverse carries several die markers: a die crack runs southwest-to-northeast through the upper hair, a die chip sits south of the W in WE, and a die crack extends north-northwest from the front of the eyebrow through the front of the forehead, with two additional die chips on the eyebrow itself. On the reverse, a die break appears at the top left of the shield north of the first U in PLURIBUS, and a die crack runs east from the lower N to the lower T in CENT. The thickening effect on LIBERTY is the primary attribution point, particularly the asymmetric Y where the right branch carries visibly more metal than the left, creating a lopsided appearance that distinguishes this variety from die deterioration doubling.
