Description

Strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY with notches visible on the lower right of ERTY distinguishes WDDO-027 as one of the more prominent doubled die obverses for the 2015 Lincoln Shield Cent. The "strong" classification indicates this doubling is more pronounced than many of the other 26 previously cataloged DDOs for this date, making it more readily identifiable under moderate magnification. Notching on ERTY — where the doubled impression creates small angular indentations in the letter profiles — provides a rapid screening diagnostic before committing to full attribution examination. Die markers on the reverse aid confirmation: a die crack runs northwest from the top left corner of the shield to the bottom right of the E in UNITED, and a die chip appears on the top left of the shield north of the L in PLURIBUS. The reverse die crack's specific trajectory provides a strong secondary attribution point because die cracks follow unique paths determined by the crystalline structure of individual die steel. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler listing are known. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, now paired with the Shield reverse rather than the Memorial or Wheat Ear designs of earlier eras, continues to serve as the medium through which obverse hub doubling manifests. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2015 1¢ WDDO-027, the strong classification makes this a particularly accessible entry point for collectors building a Shield Cent doubled die collection.
