2015 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-023
ErrorDescription
Displaying strong extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date, the 2015 Lincoln Shield Cent WDDO-023 is one of the more visually accessible doubled die varieties among modern Lincoln Cents. The "strong" classification indicates the doubled contours are pronounced enough to detect under moderate magnification without requiring high-power comparison typical of weaker varieties. Victor David Brenner's obverse Lincoln portrait — in continuous use since 1909, the longest-running obverse design in U.S. coinage — provides the backdrop for the doubled LIBERTY and date. A reverse die marker aids confirmation: a small die chip on the top of the union shield, positioned just right of center on Lyndall Bass's Shield reverse (introduced in 2010). Die chips — tiny fragments of die steel that break away, leaving raised bumps on struck coins — serve as reliable die identification landmarks. No significant obverse markers beyond the doubling have been noted. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams at the Philadelphia Mint. Cataloged by the Wexler Team with no known cross-references. Examine LIBERTY and the date digits for the strong extra thickness from hub doubling, then locate the small die chip on the shield top just right of center on the reverse.
