Description

Exhibiting light extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY with notches visible on the lower left portions of E, R, T, and Y, the 2015 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield cent WDDO-020 documents a subtle but diagnostic hub doubling event. The notching pattern on ERTY provides a reliable pickup point, as the angular displacement of letter serifs creates small shelf-like steps that differ from the smooth edges of a normal strike. Die markers support authentication on both sides. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears north of the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a small die gouge just below the U in UNITED, a small die gouge just above the scroll north of the T in CENT, and a die crack running along the top left of the shield. These progressive die features, particularly the shield die crack, help establish the die state and confirm the variety. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 2015 1¢ WDDO-020, this variety belongs to a substantial family of doubled die obverses on the Shield cent series, where Lyndall Bass's heraldic reverse and Brenner's obverse portrait continue to yield new variety discoveries as collectors examine this modern issue.
