2015 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

Extra thickness develops across LIBERTY on this 2015 Lincoln Shield cent, with the most pronounced notching visible on the lower right portions of E, R, T, and Y. The Wexler attribution (2015 1¢ WDDO-018) places this in the Class I mechanical doubling family, where the working die received a second misaligned hub impression. Obverse die markers: a small die gouge (dot) between the lower W and E of WE TRUST, a die crack running north from the eyebrow into the forehead, and a second die crack running west-to-east through Lincoln's hair above the forehead. Reverse die markers: a die gouge below the right side of the N in ONE, a die crack along the upper left edge of the Union Shield extending toward the E in UNITED, and a small die chip at the top of the shield north of the IB in PLURIBUS. The post-2010 Union Shield reverse provides a geometrically dense surface where cracks readily propagate along the horizontal and vertical rules of the shield. Collectors should focus on the ERTY notching first, then confirm with the obverse and reverse die markers. Authenticated examples appear both as standalone doubled die specimens and within comprehensive Lincoln Shield cent variety sets.
