2015 VDDR VDDR-006

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with pending die identifiers (UVC-???? and DMR-00?), the 2015 Jefferson Nickel VDDR-006 exhibits a light spread directed northward manifesting as an extra top on the right central doorway roof of Monticello — Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home that has served as the Jefferson Nickel reverse design element since 1938. The doorway roof doubling produces a visible secondary roofline above the primary one, creating a doubled architectural feature in one of the most prominent areas of the Monticello facade. Three die stages document the variety's progression: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS) featuring a die chip to the left of the designer's initials and a die crack running from the right lower portion of the building to the rim, with the obverse also in MDS; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The die crack from building to rim in Stage B documents progressive structural failure that would eventually compromise the die's ability to produce acceptable strikes. The Jefferson Nickel's Return to Monticello reverse (2006 to present), designed by Felix Schlag in a refreshed rendition from the original 1938 design, features Monticello's neoclassical architecture with its distinctive dome, portico, and columned entrance. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The Monticello building's detailed architectural elements — doorways, rooflines, columns, and dome — provide numerous surfaces where hub displacement can produce recognizable doubled features, making the Jefferson Nickel reverse a productive hunting ground for doubled die variety collectors.
