Description

Below the upper left portion of the center door frame above the steps on Monticello's facade, Class VIII tilted hub doubling is visible on this 2015 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel reverse. William Valentine attributed this variety, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2015-P WDDR-008. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that varies in intensity across the die surface because the angular displacement creates a gradient of separation between the primary and secondary hub impressions. Obverse die markers include a die crack running through Jefferson's hair and a die dot positioned above the T of LIBERTY — both useful for confirming the correct die pairing in hand. On the reverse, a die chip resides in the second O of MONTICELLO, providing an additional attribution checkpoint. The 2015 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was struck during a period of robust production, with Philadelphia contributing hundreds of millions of five-cent pieces to circulation. Felix Schlag's original 1938 Monticello design, though revised by Jamie Franki for the 2006 return, retains the detailed architectural rendering that makes the Jefferson Nickel reverse particularly susceptible to detectable hub doubling in the building's structural elements. The center door area, flanked by tall windows and framed by the columned portico, is a diagnostic hotspot where collectors frequently discover new doubled die varieties because the straight lines and precise architectural geometry amplify even minor hub displacement.
