Description

Attributed by Allen Darrow, WDDR-004 on the 2015-P Jefferson Nickel showcases Class VIII tilted hub doubling along the upper left side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII varieties result from a hub that was tilted relative to the die face during impression, creating localized displacement in the area nearest the tilt axis. This die also carries an extensive network of die cracks and gouges that aid attribution. On the obverse, a die chip sits between the E and R of LIBERTY. The reverse features a long die crack running from above the E of UNITED to the first T of STATES, then continuing through the tops of A-T-E-S and onward to the O of OF—a crack spanning nearly the full width of the upper inscription. Additional reverse markers include a die gouge above the second O of MONTICELLO and another to the right of the upper left side of the M in AMERICA. The extensive die cracking suggests this variety comes from a die well into its production run, making mid-to-late die state specimens the most likely to be encountered.
