2015 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with catalog codes UVC-1834 and DMR-006, this 2015 Jefferson Nickel DDR-004 from the Return to Monticello series displays medium spread to the east manifesting as an extra top left central doorway side of Monticello — a localized but visually striking doubling effect where the eastward hub displacement created a ghost image of the doorway architecture shifted to the right of its primary position. Three documented die stages provide progression data: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at early mid-die-state (EMDS) identified by a die break in the last O of MONTICELLO and a die gouge connecting the upper AT of STATES with the obverse also at EMDS, and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The die break in the O of MONTICELLO at Stage B represents structural die failure at a curved letter form where the thin metal bridges defining the letter's interior are susceptible to fracturing, and the die gouge connecting the upper portions of AT in STATES provides an additional diagnostic for this specific die state. The medium eastward spread on the doorway side demonstrates how Monticello's columned entrance — with its vertical columns, horizontal entablature, and triangular pediment — provides an architectural template that makes even moderate hub displacement readily identifiable, as the displaced secondary image of straight-line architectural elements creates obvious parallel doubling. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, the 2015 Jefferson Nickel continues the Monticello reverse.
