Description

Third doubled die reverse cataloged for the 2015 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this variety displays light spread east appearing as an extra top left central doorway side on the Monticello building. The doorway and architectural elements of Monticello provide natural focal points for detecting doubled die displacement, as the building's symmetrical features make even slight deviations from perfect alignment readily apparent under magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1833, DMR-005, the die documents a small die gouge in the upper M of AMERICA at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) in Stage A, with the obverse at early die state. Stage B is mid-die state (unconfirmed) and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The EMDS classification for the reverse while the obverse sits at EDS suggests the reverse die was showing slightly earlier signs of wear. The 2015 Jefferson Nickel carries the Return to Monticello reverse that has been in continuous production since 2006, following the Westward Journey series. Nickel doubled dies from the mid-2010s are actively researched, and the architectural detail of Monticello continues to yield new discoveries.
