Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2014 1c WDDO-010, this Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits strong extra thickness on LIBERTY and slight extra thickness on the date, with strong notches visible on the lower left of the letters in LIBERTY and on the top left of the T in LIBERTY. The notched letter effect occurs when the hub displacement creates a visible step or shelf at the junction where the primary and secondary letter impressions overlap, producing angular features at the letter margins that are distinct from the smooth curves of a normally struck letter. Two die stages are documented: Stage A obverse shows a small die gouge (dot) below the R in LIBERTY, with no significant reverse markers; Stage B obverse carries the same die gouge as Stage A, while Stage B reverse adds a die chip on the top left of the shield north of the first U in PLURIBUS — a progressive die deterioration marker that appeared between the two stages. The stage progression from clean reverse (Stage A) to die chip on the shield (Stage B) documents the accumulation of damage on the reverse die during production, providing a chronological framework for positioning individual specimens. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2014 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse Lincoln portrait, and Lyndall Bass designed the Shield reverse featuring a Union shield with thirteen vertical stripes beneath a scroll bearing ONE CENT. The strong notching on LIBERTY combined with the two-stage die progression makes WDDO-010 a well-documented variety with clear attribution checkpoints at each production stage.
