2014 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Light extra thickness on the date characterizes WDDO-008 on the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, where the doubling manifests as a subtle widening of the digits rather than a pronounced separation. Authentication relies heavily on the die markers, which are abundant on this variety: the obverse carries a small die gouge south of the L in LIBERTY and a short die crack running south-southwest from the bottom of the zero in the date. On the reverse, a die crack runs across the top left of the shield, a die chip sits north of the I in PLURIBUS, and a small die gouge appears below the I in AMERICA. This constellation of five distinct die markers across both sides makes WDDO-008 one of the more readily identifiable doubled die obverse varieties for the date, even when the doubling itself is light enough to require careful examination. The Shield Cent reverse, introduced in 2010, replaced the Memorial reverse and brought a new set of design elements for variety specialists to monitor. Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2014 1c WDDO-008, with no known CONECA cross-reference.
