2014 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDO-005 (Wexler Variety ID: 2014 1¢ WDDO-005), this 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent displays light extra thickness on the date numerals, the primary doubled die diagnostic. Additional die markers include a die gouge to the left of the R in TRUST, a large die chip on a die crack south-southwest of the W in WE, and on the reverse, a die crack across the top left of the shield with a die gouge below the E in UNITED. The Lincoln Shield design, introduced in 2010, replaced the Memorial reverse with a Union shield motif while retaining Victor David Brenner's classic obverse portrait. Light doubling on the date is a subtle variety — the extra thickness adds a slight widening or shadow effect to the numerals rather than producing a clearly separated secondary image. The multiple die markers (gouges, chips, and cracks) provide supplementary attribution points that help confirm identification even on worn specimens where the light doubling may be difficult to resolve. Die cracks spanning both obverse and reverse suggest this working die had developed stress fractures that manifested across both faces during production.
